Usually haymaking (without fertilizing) favours the growth of herbs to the detriment of grass species, something which can be observed on many areas of the terrain where for example the formerly dominating Bromus diandrus has almost completely vanished from the vegetation. But here is an exception: the perennial grass species Phleum phleoides (Purple-stem Catstail) is now surprisingly dominant and expanding on two spots (totaling about 100 square metres) near the house. This vegetation is cut and removed every year but as it offers such a beautiful dynamic and aesthetical aspect I usually cut it at the end of the winter, also providing the opportunity for the Phleum to produce viable seed. The combined play of sunlight and wind makes this grass a real delight to observe during the mayor part of the year, as it is remarkable drought resistant and many of its purple-red turning stems survive the winter. In this time of the year they often give the impression of agitated, Van Gogh-like brush strokes.

Normalmente la siega de una pradera (sin fertilizar) favorece el desarrollo de hierbas en detrimento de gramíneas, algo que se puede detectar en muchas áreas en el terreno, donde por ejemplo la gramínea Bromus diandrus, antes dominante, ha desaparecido casi por completo. Pero aquí hay una excepción: la gramínea perenne Phleum phleoides está ahora sorprendentemente dominante y expandiendo en dos áreas (de unos 100 metros en total) cerca de la casa. Esta vegetación se corta y quita cada año pero ofrece un aspecto tan dinámico y estéticamente agradable que lo siego al final del invierno, también dándola al Phleum la oportunidad de producir semillas viables. El juego combinado de luz solar con el viento es realmente fascinante de observar durante la mayor parte del año, porque es notablemente resistente a la sequía y muchos de sus tallos, que se hacen rojo-purpuras, sobreviven al invierno. En esto momento del año dan el aspecto de agitadas pinceladas al estilo de Van Gogh.
