Beautiful protection

The green roof of the new wing is living its third spring and doing well. The inclination is with 1.5% much less than the roof of the kitchen-dining-room and so the rainwater will soak the soil better, giving more opportunities for the growth of grasses, in this case Bromus diandrus and Lolium perenne, especially in the center, but they will probably not survive the long hot summer. The settlement of the beautiful blue Iris germanica on the latter roof was not planned but developed spontaneously from pieces of rhizomes left in the soil. Apart from its beauty, the long erect leaves produce a good protective and insulating layer. For the new roof I planted quite some rhizomes to get the same result.

When the Irises stop flowering the Sedums will take over, starting with Sedum acre at the end of the month.

El tejado verde de la nueva ala vive su tercera primavera y tira bien. La inclinación de 1,5% es bastante menos que la del tejado del cocina-comedor y el agua de la lluvia empapará mejor el suelo, dando más oportunidades a las gramíneas, en este caso Bromus diandrus y Lolium perenne, especialmente en el centro, pero estas probablemente no sobrevivirán al largo verano seco. La colonización del precioso Iris germánica (azul) en el tejado del comedor no fue planificado sino se desarrolló espontáneamente a partir de piezas de rizomas en el suelo. Además de su belleza, las largas hojas erectas proporcionan una buena capa protectora y aislante. Para el nuevo tejado planté unos cuantos rizomas para conseguir el mismo resultado.

Cuando las Iris dejan de florecer empezará la floración de los Sedum, empezando con el Sedum acre al final de este mes.
