dry and alive

This area should have been mown by now, if only for the fire hazard: in the past extremely dry weeks there were some minor fire outbreaks in the neighbourhood provoked by a combine harvesting the barley. But a mown field in mid-summer is all but animating or interesting while the vegetation at the moment is still pleasant to look at, attracting loads of insects especially on the flower heads of Eryngium campestre (the almost white patches in the photograph). So I decide to wait, also because of the rain which is expected in the coming days. The harvesting machine passed some days ago and I was present and alert, ready to smother any beginning of fire.

Este área debería haberse segado ya, entre otras cosas por el riesgo de incendio: en las últimas semanas, extremamente secas, hubo algunos incendios menores en la región provocados por una cosechadora. Pero un campo segado en pleno verano es todo menos animado o interesante mientras la vegetación ahora tiene todavía un aspecto bastante vivo, atrayendo montones de insectos especialmente en las flores de Eryngium campestre (las manchas casi blancas en la foto). Asi que he decido esperar, también porque auguran chubascos en los próximos días. La cosechadora pasó la semana pasada y yo estaba alerta y preparado para sofocar cualquier inicio de fuego.
